The international register for geographical indications has become a reality
On 26 February, the Geneva Act on WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications finally entered into force.
WIPO is a specialized UN body that aims, through cooperation between states, to promote the protection of intellectual property worldwide, especially in cross-border issues.
The long-awaited international register thus facilitates the protection of GIs in foreign jurisdictions by further strengthening the protection of Gorgonzola cheese.
A note from OriGIn states: “This increases legal certainty in international trade for producers, processors, distributors and consumers, and in this regard, the entry into force of the Geneva Act is a strong message for open and rule-based trade”.
This step represents a milestone that carries through with the efforts that also the Consorzio di Tutela del Formaggio Gorgonzola Dop has always applied for the activation of these awards at international level.
