In the third quarter of this year, production of Gorgonzola Pdo reached 3,860,162 wheels, an increase of 1.10 % over the same period last year and 3.53 % over 2022.
In September 2024 alone, 462 thousand wheels were produced, of which 323,637 were produced in Piedmont and 138,363 in Lombardy. In the same month, the share of Spicy Gorgonzola in the total produced was about 13 % (equal to 62 thousand wheels) and showed a growth of 53% compared to the same month of the previous year.
Excellent export performance as well. As of July 31, 2024, 1,249,583 wheels were destined for international markets, up 5.4 % compared to the same period in 2023. Gorgonzola consumption is growing by 5 % in Europe, which has always been the primary target market, and by 8 % worldwide. There were 1,078,166 wheels destined within the EU, while those that flew across EU borders reached a record 171,333 wheels. The breakdown by country sees France in the lead with 293,258 imported wheels (+4.4 % compared to the same period last year), followed by Germany with 272,417 wheels (+6.5 %) and Spain with 95,540 wheels (+9.8 %). The first non-EU country, Japan, with 24,515 wheels imported in the first half of this year (-2.7%), followed by the United States, to which 18,393 wheels flew (+2.9%). Of note is the 11.7 % growth in exports to the United Kingdom with just under 22 thousand wheels (Clal data).
