2019 figure increased by 176,482 wheels (+3.64%) versus 2018 and by 293,070 wheels (+6.19%) versus 2017, confirming that in the last decade the production of Gorgonzola PDO has been consistently growing, without ever experiencing a setback.
INCREASED GORGONZOLA EXPORT WORLDWIDE: + 3.8% VERSUS 2018
In the field of Italian PDO cheeses in the world, Gorgonzola PDO once again is the third cow milk cheese by produced volume, after Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano.
In 2019, 1 million 866 thousand wheels (22,394 tons) crossed the border, with a 3.8% increase compared to the previous year.
The European Union absorbed 87% of the exported produce, while export to the rest of the world has fallen slightly.
The globally best performing countries have been Germany, France, Spain, UK and The Netherlands. The first extra EU country is Japan, followed by the United States.
President Renato Invernizzi commented: “Gorgonzola cheese reached such positive and constant growth also thanks to the continuous collective commitment, Consortium and Member Companies, to safeguard the values of tradition, promoting quality and fighting counterfeiting, that are the main principles of our business”
