GORGONZOLA IS A TASTY ALLY IN PREVENTION AT THE DINNER TABLE

February 4 marks World Cancer Day, supported by the World Health Organization. Like every year, the day is dedicated to raising awareness of the prevention of this disease and providing information on the correct practices to follow to try to prevent and limit cancer occurrence.

It is a set of daily, internationally codified rules, such as eliminating smoking and combating secondhand smoke, limiting alcohol consumption, exercising, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and following a healthy diet.

When it comes to the dinner table, according to a study by Israel’s Weizmann Institute, published in the journal Cell Metabolism and reported by AGI news agency (*), consistent intake of certain foods, naturally rich in spermidine, such as green peas, soybeans, corn and blue cheeses, including Gorgonzola Pdo, could help in the prevention of various diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Spermidine is a compound that belongs to the family of polyamines, which are present in living cells and are responsible for regulating fundamental cellular processes, such as cell growth and proliferation. The study revealed that spermidine reverses the body’s circadian rhythm making people less prone to develop age-related diseases. Laboratory tests revealed, in fact, that mice that took spermidine had biological clocks that ran about eight minutes faster than untreated mice. Gad Asher, one of the study’s authors, commented, “This finding demonstrates the close intertwining between circadian clocks and metabolism and opens up new possibilities for nutritional interventions that modulate the function of our clock.”

The natural presence of spermidine in Gorgonzola Pdo, a compound so valuable to our bodies, makes consumption of the “King of blue cheeses” an ideal food choice to take care of one’s health, along with a varied and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, while enjoying the joys of good food.
