June 18 is the “International Picnic Day”. In the UK a whole week is dedicated to this typical outdoors lunch (this year from 16 to 25 June), while in Australia it has even become a bank holiday.
It can be organised in several locations. In the town park, on the riverbank or at the lakeside, in the mountains, on the beach, maybe at sunset when it is cooler. It can be shared with many friends, such as the Guinness record picnic that was held 10 years ago in Lisbon with 22,000 participants, or it may as well be romantic, for just two people, maybe by candlelight.
For sure it was invented by the French. Right after the French Revolution, at the beginning of the 19th century, royal gardens were opened for the first time to the public and common citizens went visiting taking their own lunch from home. The French painter Manet, portrayed this scene in one of his most famous paintings, “The Luncheon on the Grass (Le déjeuner sur l’herbe) in 1863.
